Lesson Two: Richard Pellissier-Lush 156 ACQUIRE: RICHARD PELLISSIERLUSH'S FIRESIDE CHAT INTERVIEW https://www.firesidechats.ca/video/richard-pellissier-lush Richard Lush is a Mi'kmaq man from Lennox Island First Nation, PEI. His passions are based on his Mi'kmaq culture, traditions, loyalty and love of the First Nations communities and his family, the Mi'kmaq people. He previously worked with the PEI Aboriginal Sport Circle and was heavily involved with the two First Nation Communities here in PEI, his biggest strength is working with his Mi'kmaq brothers and sisters. Richard graduated and was selected to be the Valedictorian of his 2012 Sport & Leisure Management Program, and continued his Education at the University of Manitoba. Richard has converted his skills he learned through education, as skills to creating opportunities for the First Nation Communities in PEI to thrive, preserve, and educate Indigenous and non Indigenous people across Mikjikj Mniku (Turtle Island). Richard is one of the founders and original members of Mi'kmaq Legends (Mi'kmaq Heritage Actors), an all Indigenous Theatre Group that specializes in telling the stories, traditions, songs, dances, and culture of the Mi'kmaq from the past, and present. Play Richard Pellissier-Lush's Fireside Chat Interview, or provide students time to read his story in the textbook or on the web site. To debrief the video, ask the class the following questions: 1.What are some of Richard's passions and interests? 2.How did Richard make sure he stayed on a good path? 3.How did Richard secure a chance to try-out for the University of Manitoba's football team? 4.What was Richard's education journey like? 5.What advice does Richard have for youth? 6.How has Richard demonstrated each of the seven sacred teachings throughout his life? In Richard's interview, he talks about his passion for theatre and helping his community. Inform students that in the next part of the lesson, they will be utilizing theatre to learn about sportsmanship. APPLY: ROLE PLAYING Inform students that in this activity, they will be role-playing ways the Seven Sacred Teachings can be utilized in various situations in sports and demonstrating how to be a good teammate by engaging in positive sportsmanship. Remind them to think of the examples of good sportsman- ship they came up with in the activating activity, as well as the video they watched. Next, divide students into groups of 3-4. Assign each team one of the Seven Sacred Teachings. Teams will have 10 minutes to brainstorm a scenario where the teaching can be applied and practice acting out their response. For example, if a team is assigned the teaching "humility", they have to think of a scenario where a teammate demonstrates humility such as passing the ball to a teammate in the final seconds of a close basketball game, rather than attempting the shot by themselves. Once teams are done, have them act out their scenarios for the class while other teams guess what the situation is and which teaching they are demonstrating. After each team showcases their role-playing scenarios, ask the other groups what they thought of the group's response – in what ways did it demonstrate positive sportsmanship? Which of the seven sacred teachings was utilized? How can you apply this teaching in other situations outside of sports? Once everyone has had a turn thank students for taking a risk and engaging in the activity!
