Lesson One: Taylar Belanger 110 Western Science and Traditional Knowledges Research Essay Introduction: For this project, you will write a research essay analyzing the dierences and similarities between western science and traditional ecological knowledge. You will answer the question What are the dierences and similarities between the western scientific worldview and the tradi- tional Indigenous worldview when looking at a field of flowers? You will research what a botanist and a traditional Indigenous medicine person would see when looking at a field of flowers, including but not limited to aspects such as naming plants, plant uses, and dissemination of knowledge. Compare the two worldview dierences and similarities. For your research you may use the internet, books, journal articles, talking with an Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, or talking with an Indigenous Elder. Requirements: •500-700 words (2 pages) •Introduction •Examine the western science viewpoint •Examine the traditional ecological viewpoint •Compare and contrast the two viewpoints •Conclusion •Reference page Background: Traditional Ecological Knowledge, also called by other names including Indigenous Knowledge or Native Science, refers to the evolving knowledge that Indigenous peoples have obtained over hundreds and thousands of years through direct contact with the environment and Mother Earth. This knowledge is specific to the location where they live. It includes the relationships between plants, animals, weather, landscapes and Mother Earth. Knowledge is used for daily life, medicine making, hunting, fishing, trapping, agriculture, and forestry. Traditional Ecological Knowledge is handed down through generations by oral storytelling and hands-on learning. How do you think the two dierent perspectives would see this field of Fireweed?
