Lesson 1: Music Industry Basics (Caid Jones) CREATE TO LEARN Finally, ask students to raise their hands if "musical" intelligence was in their top three. Inform the group that today, we will be learning what it takes to get into the music industry! ACQUIRE: Have students read "Music Industry Basics" by Caid Jones found on pages 184 - 190 of the Create to Learn textbook. Alternatively, students can watch his lessons here: https://www.createtolearn.ca/tutorial/music-industry-basics To debrief the reading, ask the class the following questions: 1. Based on Caid's equipment recommendations, how much money does it cost to get set up? 2. What's the difference between a distributor and a publisher? What are royalties? 3. What is the difference between copyright and licensing? 4. What are the qualities of the people Caid recommends having on your team? 5. What information do you need to know about your business? 6. What does Caid say are the three pillars that every artist starting out should know? APPLY: REFLECTION BLOG Inform the class that they will be reflecting on their learning experiences throughout this unit in the form of a classroom blog. A blog post is an informal piece of writing published on a website. Typically, a blog post is written in a diary entry-like format (in first person), where writers explain and describe their personal experiences with a topic. To add to their credibility, bloggers will often include a bit of research in their posts as well. Additionally, many bloggers get paid (either through contract writing for a company or through advertising revenue on their website) so it is essential that their writing captivates their audience. Teachers have the option of setting up a free website to officially publish the blog posts, using their school website, or simply having students' hand in their blog reflections privately. Typically, a blog post has the following characteristics: 1. A catchy title 2. A hook that catches the reader's attention 3. Body paragraphs that explain and describe a personal experience. 4. An effective conclusion 5. A consistent voice throughout, ie. Your personality portrayed through your writing 6. Extra such as photos, videos, links to other websites etc. (optional) For their first blog post, have students answer one of the following prompts: 1. What did you learn about the music industry? Do you think you have what it takes to get into the music industry? Why or why not? What steps can you take now to get started? 2. What do you think about the Theory of Multiple Intelligences? What were your top three types of intelligence? Do you agree? Why or why not? What jobs or careers fit into your top three? Before they begin writing, review the "Blog Post Rubric" with students so they know how they are being graded each time. ASSESS: BLOG POST RUBRIC Use the "Blog Post Rubric" to assess students' writing.
