Many colleges and universities across the country have prioritized
Indigenous education and representation by incorporating First Nations,
Métis, Inuit, and Afro-Indigenous perspectives, knowledges, and worldviews
throughout campuses. With school closures and social distancing measures
enforced, many Indigenization initiatives have been impacted. Some
initiatives may have been put off while others may be flourishing in virtual
learning spaces.
On January 27, 2021, staff and faulty who work with Indigenous
students in post-secondary education gathered for a Virtual Sharing Circle
to discuss the impacts of COVID-19 on Indigenization efforts within their
institutions. Discussion prompts within the sharing circles included: What
Indigenization initiatives have been put off due to COVID-19? What
initiatives are able to flourish at this time? What are some of the barriers
preventing these initiatives from flourishing?
This report includes the themes that emerged from the sharing circle
discussions and is followed by recommendations for post-secondary
institutions.
