S O N G W R I T I N G 1 0 1 79 THE VALUE OF SIMPLICITY However you arrange things, keep it simple. " The best songwriters are able to get their point across and really distill their message in as [few] words as possible." Now that you know how to arrange a song, you can start giving your ideas a more defined shape! LESSON 6: THE GUITAR For this lesson, your guitar should be tuned with a standard E, A, D, G, B, E. You can add different effects to your guitar play either through strumming or picking. In the example Evan shared with us, he was playing the verse chords without any vocals. This gave him space to add embellishments that would be harder to pull off while singing. Working with the dynamic and the space in the music can help break up repetition. By adding flourishes, you're giving the song more life so you can start telling the story. Tune into Evan's video and play along! ' LESSON 7: HOME STUDIO SETUP Evan shared with us his home studio set up to give a behind the scenes look at his process. It has a piano, guitar, and a dynamic microphone. The microphone is used typically for broadcasting and voiceover work. Evan finds it works well for recording vocals and voices. He uses a pop filter to help pick up P's, T's and S's. Before he could afford a pop filter he used his mom's old nylons. A condenser microphone is much more refined. They are slightly more expensive than a dynamic microphone and really sensitive. It does require a little bit more in the way of power, but it picks up all the really fine details in recording. It's good for detailed vocals and acoustic guitar.
