S O N G W R I T I N G 1 0 1 75 "Writing within the indigenous community and being a part of the indigenous music community it's important to know all this stuff. It's important to help spread those stories." Here is some music that inspires Evan: • The Jayhawks Rainy Day Music • Wilco Sky Blue Sky • John Prine • Lucinda Williams • Gillian Welch Soul Journey "You've got to have these tools to record these ideas." TIPS: • Keep a composition book or your cell phone on hand for lyrics and music memos. • Revisit old ideas. " There's never, ever, ever any bad ideas when it comes to songwriting and you should always be throwing paint at the wall." LESSON 2 FINDING MORE INSPIRATION "Some songs just happen and some songs just almost write themselves in a way." When writing Time Bomb, Evan was inspired by Tania's writing about the challenges Indigenous people face. He encourages aspiring songwriters to draw inspirations from anywhere and everywhere and to be aware that these won't always be happy things but it's important to share your perspective. "The important part of this whole process is that you're always listening with an open heart to literally anything." Being open to the inspiration around you is so important as a songwriter. You might feel like you look crazy talking into your phone on the street to record an idea, but it's worth it. "Inspiration can literally quite literally just be anywhere and fall from the sky. If you always pick up those pieces and you put them in your back pocket, so to speak, you just never know when it can inspire you to just finish and write a song."
