F I L M A N D P H O T O G R A P H Y B A S I C S 87 "Sometimes getting that soundbite and having a video file is better than having nothing." LESSON 3: B ROLL Lesson 3 focuses on B-Roll, what it is, what it means, why it's important, why it's Sara's favorite thing. B-roll is alternate footage that can be interspersed in with the main footage. "B Roll Is the act of filming footage that is going to aid your story. B Roll can be so beautiful and it can push stories to places that they may not have been able to go without that footage." HOW TO TAKE GREAT B-ROLL Step 1: Hold Steady Hold your camera as steady as you can. Use your hands or use tools to stabilize your camera while you take your B-Roll. Step 2: Count To Ten Make sure in all the excitement and anxiety of filming that you get enough footage. That's why counting to ten is really helpful. "Even if you don' t have access to all the tools and all the tricks and the most exciting story, you can tell something so beautiful just from holding your shots." SLOW MOTION Filming in slow motion means filming at 60 or 120 frames per second. Your phone can film at this frame rate. If you're using a camera you will need to switch the frame rate. B Roll Cheat Sheet Get B Roll if you can. • It' s better if the B-Roll is footage of what people are talking about. • Use a wide variety of shots, get some wides, get some tights, get some mediums. • If you can't film what the people are talking about, film something complimentary to it.
