Before the start of physical distancing
guidelines, the Youth Art Exchange
team was planning to have a
community project that included
graphic design, block printing, and
a community mural. However, all
the skills that were planned to be
learned through this project required
participants to meet in person. In
response to the challenges posed by
the COVID 19 pandemic, the Youth
Art Exchange team found innovative
ways to complete this project through
virtual programming.
To better virtually engage the
participants, the Youth Art Exchange
team redesigned their curriculum
to include new components such
as drawing classes, and producing
a colouring book in addition to
continuing to learn graphic design
skills and block printmaking at home.
Participants met virtually twice a week
through two hour long sessions, using
material kits provided by the Youth
Art Exchange team to aid their skill
development.
These new workshop sessions allowed
participants to work individually
on their prints at home but also
collaborate with peers to produce a
product for their community.
