64 # R I S I N G Y O U T H C O M M U N I T Y I M P A C T As New Brunswick welcomes more newcomers and international students to boost its population and economy, #RisingYouth grantee Khairunnisa Intiar is working to foster relationships between people of different cultures to create deeper cultural understanding and to cultivate empathy. Working together with team members of Woven Cultures, a diversity and inclusion project in Moncton, as well as the University of Moncton's student union, Khairunnisa organized the Language Lounge. Language Lounge brought together people of various linguistic backgrounds who wanted to learn and practice other languages while also sharing their own. Each attendee was given a pin that reflected the languages they spoke and/or wanted to learn and practice. They were then encouraged to mingle and find others who spoke the language they want to learn and begin conversations in that language. Over 40 people attended the event to learn about other cultures, make new friends, and celebrate Moncton's increasingly diverse community. " People who wouldn't generally meet did meet, and were making new friendships while at the same time learning about different cultures and languages. A fun event like this brought together people young and old from all backgrounds." KHAIRUNNISA INTIAR Language Lounge Khairunnisa Intiar | $250 Moncton, New Brunswick NEW BRUNSWICK Moncton is located on Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) and Mi'kmaq territory as part of the Peace and Friendship Treaty.
