#RisingYouth grantee Refik
Kehler organized a one-day
community conference on
poverty education and action.
Ten speakers shared their own
lived experiences in the areas of
food security and mental health.
Attendees heard diverse
perspectives from individuals
identifying as a woman,
youth, LGBTQ2+, senior, and
refugee. Hearing from these
different intersections was
important to understanding
the complex and diverse lived
experiences of poverty. But the
conference did not stop there.
Beyond awareness and
education, Refik's conference
also encouraged participants
to get involved through social
actions. This included street
journalism and social media
engagement about mental health,
the development of a game to
cultivate empathy, and letters
written to legislators about
refugee rights. The conference
mobilized youth in high schools
and post-secondary institutions
to learn more and get involved
in creating systemic change!
" Many new perspectives were
brought to new people. The
conference gave a platform
for people with lived
experiences of poverty to
speak and share their story."
