168 # R I S I N G Y O U T H C O M M U N I T Y I M P A C T As a response to the growing issue of food insecurity, #RisingYouth grantee Lannah Hall put together a 27-week garden project to engage her local community. She worked in collaboration with the Street Culture Project (SCP) to specifically engage vulnerable youth between the ages of 14 to 21 in gardening and other food sustainability practices. A few youth who took part in the project became more involved with the garden while some even went so far as to make tending to the garden a part of their routine. Many of the youth found it meaningful to see their plant grow from a little seedling to a large tomato or cucumber plant. One youth in particular was in the garden almost every day and would bring other street-involved youth to hang out and eat from the garden. Not only was Lannah able to mobilize against food insecurity, she even inspired other youth to do the same! " The biggest success achieved through the Garden Project was the produce itself and youth engagement. Due to the volume of produce, we were able to supply healthy and fresh produce for the Emergency Youth Shelter, four SCP Peer Homes, and the Regina Food Bank! More than that, the engagement with youth led to more confidence in gardening and a new appreciation for the accessibility of fresh produce."
