In recognition and support of
the Truth and Reconciliation's
Calls to Action – specifically
number 8 calling upon the federal
government to eliminate the
discrepancy in federal education
funding for First Nations children
– #RisingYouth grantee Aysha
Yaqoob partnered with nearby
schools in her community located
on reserves. She used her grant
to purchase basic school supplies
including notebooks, pencils,
duotangs, rulers, highlighters,
calculators, and other essentials
to help close the resource gap.
She and her school aimed to
partner with at least one school
on a reserve and another
that supported and sustained
Indigenous culture, education,
and language. In the end, they
partnered with St. Francis
Cree Bilingual Community
School, St. Olivier School,
White Bear Education Complex,
and Kakisiwew School and
provided essential supplies to
support children's learning!
" This was our busiest year yet! Not only did we
revamp our initiative to better support the Truth and
Reconciliation's 94 Calls to Action, but we also revamped
our website, launched a new program, partnered with
four different schools, and created a new and improved
way for the community to connect with us!"
