People of colour have often
been silenced and marginalized
in society and #RisingYouth
grantee Mitchell Cousineau
wanted to provide people of
colour with the care that they
lacked throughout their studies.
They used their grant to develop
ChamPaint, a space for youth
of colour to have a sense of
community and come together
to paint as a form of relaxation
and an expression of creativity.
In addition to the art component,
Mitchell also organized
discussions on various topics
related to identity and the
experiences of racialized youth.
Their goal was to create a safe
space where youth of colour
felt heard and validated by
their peers. They achieved
exactly that as there were
discussions amongst participants
giving advice and support!
" We felt most proud of how
many people came and not
only listened with a deep
level of respect, but also
shared their own important
stories with the group. Given
that people didn't know
each other unless they came
with a friend, knowing we
were able to curate a safer
space where youth of colour
could be vulnerable has felt
like a great achievement."
