#RisingYouth grantees Jagroop
Johal and Gurleen Makore
initiated the Power of Periods
project at their school with the
mission of ending period stigma
and making sure that all women
– cis and trans alike – have
access to menstrual products.
Recognizing that menstrual
products are a necessity and
not a privilege, Jagroop and
Gurleen hosted "Menstrual
Monday", one Monday every
month where they would collect
donations for pads, tampons, and
sanitary wipes while engaging in
discussions about menstruation
with peers at school. They
then used their grant to buy
additional supplies to create
care packages that were donated
to a local shelter in Toronto.
The Power of Periods project
was an impactful way to
cultivate conversations about
a natural process that over
50% of the world's population
experiences on a monthly
basis. It was a significant act
of empowering women!
" One of the biggest
achievements throughout
our project was officially
making the care packages
that had been donated to
the homeless shelter and
knowing we had provided
over 100 essential menstrual
products for women!"
