124 # R I S I N G Y O U T H C O M M U N I T Y I M P A C T Seeing the lack of diversity in mainstream Canadian arts and literature, #RisingYouth grantee Justine Abigail Yu created Living Hyphen, a magazine that explores and celebrates the experiences of Canadians "living in between" diverse ethnic backgrounds, religions, and Indigenous nations. She used her grant to facilitate writing workshops and storytelling events across the Greater Toronto Area with the goal of developing the writing skills and build up the confidence of young Black, Indigenous, and Person(s) of Colour (BIPOC) to tell their stories. Facilitated by BIPOC for BIPOC writers, Justine's goal was to support and grow the art and writing of youth from underrepresented communities. Engaging over 50 people through writing workshops and open mic nights, Justine's #RisingYouth project helped to cultivate a safe and positive space for BIPOC youth to share their stories, creating a ripple effect for more storytelling and sharing of important lived experiences! " Our mission at Living Hyphen is to diversify Canadian arts and literature and to turn up the volume on voices that typically go unheard. Facilitating the learning and honing the storytelling skills of young BIPOC is one essential step in that direction. The #RisingYouth grant has empowered us to provide the necessary tools and programming to make that happen!"
