#RisingYouth grantee Carmen Lee
facilitated a three-day character
mask workshop specifically
designed for immigrants in
Halifax. The use of masks has
a long history in theatre and
Carmen used it as a way to
open up conversations about
migration. Participants explored
the character of their masks,
developing a relationship with
it based on their immigration
story. As someone who moved
to Canada from Hong Kong,
and as someone who studied
and specializes in theatre and
entertainment arts, this was a
very symbolic project for Carmen.
The project is the first phase
of Settle Elsewhere, a broader
project that involves a 20-minute
performance showcase outside
of the Halifax Central Library,
as well as a documentary
about Nova Scotia's diverse
immigrant community.
" It is such a joy to see
immigrants from various
countries came together
in one room. We created,
explored, and played
together. Character mask
workshops are rarely
seen and provided in Nova
Scotia. The participants
felt amazing that they were
involved and learned lots
of new knowledge in each
day. We built such a strong
bond throughout the days!"
