Halifax has many beautiful trails
and green spaces, but they
often become cluttered with
garbage. For #RisingYouth grantee
Courtney Witter, this signalled
the lack of environmental
connection as well as awareness
in her community and society,
in general. That's why she
initiated a project in her local
community that focused not just
on cleaning up these trails, but
also educating the community
on the impact of their actions.
Throughout the fall season,
Courtney led a four-part series
engaging local youth to clean
trails, parks, and beaches in
and around Halifax. At each
clean-up, she also led different
discussions on topics such as
waste management, single-
use plastics and their effect
on ocean life, repurposing
resources over disposal, and
living a zero-waste life. Over 50
people participated in both the
clean-ups and discussions!
" The interactive trips,
volunteering, and learning
opportunities of the
program helped to build
awareness around these
issues in Halifax. Many
good conversations were
had on our trips."
