#RisingYouth grantee Rita Huang
organized a five-day leadership
summer camp designed to teach
youth between the ages of 14
to 18 about social justice and
leadership. Through interactive
workshops and plenaries, the
summer camp educated youth
about the inequalities taking
place around the world on
micro- and macro-levels, while
also motivating and empowering
them to take action. The sessions
widely varied from practical
topics on how to apply for grants
and using artistic media for
activism to broader and heavier
issues on the endangerment
of bees, the misrepresentation
of mental illness in pop
culture, and gun violence.
Beyond the formal workshops
and plenaries, Rita's leadership
camp also involved recreational
activities where youth could bond
and develop their teamwork
skills through a series of physical
(relay races and minute-to-
win-it games), mental (escape
room), and creative (banner- and
cheer-making) challenges.

a lasting impact on
participants. They stated
that they learned new
information and met life-
long friends. Many said
they would carry forth the
knowledge back to their
communities - initiating
events that would
positively impact them."
