There are such beautifully diverse
experiences within the LGBTQ2+
community and #RisingYouth
grantee Chaz Prairie Chicken
made sure to celebrate this
with his #RisingYouth grant!
Chaz and the Urban Society for
Aboriginal Youth (USAY) used
their funding to support ten
Indigenous youth to participate
in the Calgary Pride Parade!
These youth marched in the
parade with mini rainbow flags,
rainbow bracelets, rainbow
tattoos, and t-shirts. Three young
fancy dancers performed with
their mothers at the parade
while traditional music and an
emcee pumped up the crowd.
Chaz and USAY wanted to ensure
that two-spirited Indigenous
youth had the opportunity to
create positive social connections
and to feel included in both
their Indigenous and LGBTQ2+
community. It was important
to the youth participants
that the group be diverse,
varied, and representative
of all Indigenous nations.
" At the Calgary Pride
Parade there was an
overwhelmingly positive
and lively vibe and many
of the youth said they felt
inspired to advocate and
protect their LGBTQ2+
and Indigenous cultures
in a more intentional
way in the future."
