processes, Indigenous nations have remained steadfast in protecting their lands, knowledge, and cultures. In order for Canadian institutions at large to better serve Indigenous peoples, we need to first consider our collective and personal responsibilities in removing colonial systems of oppression and upholding all cultures with equal merit. Indigenous young people are entering into mainstream social institutions at an increasing rate. The perspectives we were fortunate to hear exemplified the strength, commitment, and resilience of our communities. Indigenous young people want to succeed, and they have a wealth of knowledge to help them to do so. We heard of many examples where Indigenous young people are thriving, but also situations that are less ideal. We know that Indigenous students have an easier time succeeding in school and in the workplace when there is a clear pathway that can lead them to their future goals. Developing that pathway requires a commitment to removing barriers that continue to marginalize particular bodies and minds. This means having an openness for change and a critical reflection process that allows us to assess how we are doing. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach to supporting Indigenous people; it is a journey we engage in that might have bumps and turns along the way, but one we should walk together. The Connected North and Future Pathways programs are examples of mechanisms to facilitate success trajectories for Indigenous young people wherein they can access Indigenous role models and a support network of Indigenous people with similar experiences. When Indigenous young people can see the potential opportunities they can access, they are able to achieve for themselves something they may have otherwise realized was possible. Our roles as allies are to light the way and build bridges where there may be gaps in the road. Future Pathways Summit Report 24
