POLICY Federal The only way we can effectively implement nationwide change on plastic use in Canada is through federal policy intending to disincentivize single-use plastics. As Canada is a large country of 36 million people, living within incredibly unique and diverse communities, there is no effective way to implement a policy to classify each citizen into a specific waste management or recycling system. We recognize that change across a country so vast and so geographically different can not be solved with a blanket solution. However by effective leadership, and changing broad policy initiatives at a federal level, we can promote positive and ethical change to trickle into every single community that our nation encompasses. As the youth of Canada we want to see our country working together to keep our beloved oceans clean. We believe that our communities, municipalities, and provinces should have more strict regulations on single use plastic. These restrictions should be promoted by more programs (and reinforced with adequate funding) that encourages people thinking about the impact for their waste and reducing it. We call for the Senate to put a policy into place that enforces provinces and territories to distribute funds towards municipalities to create new regulations to take away the appeal and convenience of single-use plastics in whichever way that government deems appropriate. These regulations could range from reducing the amount of single use plastics, controlling the plastics that are used in communities and creating a more sustainable use for plastics.
