the world as it is—with all the injustices, vanishing species, and scary statistics— while simultaneously trusting in our capacity to act towards a more just and desirable future, and in the ability of human and non-human life to adapt, persist, and care for one another when disaster occurs. Acknowledge loss and make space for grief. We cannot save all species or stop climate change. This is the reality. However, we can and should act to mitigate impacts, as there may still be a chance of preventing tipping points that would send the Earth spiralling towards catastrophic warming, overwhelming the ability of many people to adapt. Understand and teach that local ecosystems are vital for planetary resilience. Teach about justice. Not only is working to lessen the inequality of climate change causes and impacts the right thing to do, it is a key area where individuals—and students—can make a difference. What can we share with youth? Know that you have rights! You are an integral member of your community and have the right to participate in decisions that affect you. Think about the recommendations we have given to teachers, parents and policy makers. Many of them apply to you too. Hold adults in your life accountable. Form a group. Have fun being around your peers and being passionate about climate change and environmental issues. Provide emotional support to each other when it gets hard. Don't try to solve climate change alone. The whole world is struggling to do just that. Remember that you, as a young person, are part of a big community that is growing everyday. Reach out beyond your peer group to find support. Other youth organizations acting to address climate change already exist and you can join them. This is Zero Hour, Earth Guardians, and Sunrise Movement are examples of youth movements that can inspire you, with networks you can join to multiply your efforts. | 77 Y O U T H A N D C L I M A T E C H A N G E 2 0 1 8 E D I T I O N
