mitigation through reforestation, renewable energy promotion, transportation upgrades, and raising citizen awareness. Many also called for mandatory climate change curriculum. 2 . 2 . 4 Do You th Diagnose the Under lying Causes o f Clima te Change ? As climate change researchers, we were impressed by the system-level analyses expressed by the youth team, and agree fully that changes need to occur in the minds of citizens, in education systems, and ultimately in structures of government. As the project progressed, assignments prompted team members to identify causes of climate change beyond individual carbon footprints. Without attempting to validate the accuracy of their diagnoses, we attend to team members' opinions about the systemic causes of climate change. One key cause of climate change identified multiple times is increasing growth, with reference to urbanization, transportation, population and economic growth. Steffen et al. (2015) echo that growth is strongly linked to climate change, noting the exponential growth of population and GDP in tandem with greenhouse gas emissions observed in the last half century. Economic growth and urbanisation move in tandem, as do the level of urbanisation being a huge contributing factor of the emission of greenhouse gases ( L O N D O N , B L O G 2 A ) Demographic growth leads to consumption which leads to the extraction of even more resources… we have to stop reproducing as we are doing… we think we have unlimited resources but we don't. ( B O G O T Á 2 , I N T E R V I E W ) A few team members attributed environmental destruction and climate change to capitalism and greed. Team members rejected the prioritization of profit at the expense of the environment, but it is primarily individual greed they focus on rejecting; the youth rarely mentioned the | 49 Y O U T H A N D C L I M A T E C H A N G E 2 0 1 8 E D I T I O N
