under the name Youth Voices and Climate Change Knowledge:
Empowering Youth in Conversations on Climate Impact and
Vulnerabilities. Delegates represented every project country
except Mexico and the United Kingdom, though students from
these countries were encouraged to participate online. Students
lived together at The Bennett Centre in Edmonton, where they
worked through a collaborative writing process to select key
themes, and determine paper structure, sharing their ideas using
blog posts to ensure representation of the larger student group.
As was the case throughout the project, familiarity with English
was varied, and components of the paper were co-written and
translated using Google translate or students' knowledge of each
other's languages. Throughout the process, the facilitator worked to
keep her voice out of the paper, focusing instead on asking critical
questions, directing students to additional resources, and ensuring
students worked on the components of the paper about which they
were most interested and knowledgeable. As a result, the White
Paper was directed by the students themselves, and it was their
voices that were shared with the IPCC, through the
paper and in-person.
