Members of the youth team
were also motivated by an
acute sensitivity to justice,
expressing awareness that
Indigenous peoples, the poor,
and many other marginalized
peoples are least responsible
for causing climate change,
and yet, will often experience
the worst impacts. Cultivating a
moral obligation to respond to
injustice provides an important
incentive to act, perhaps far
more effectively than heroic
narratives of 'saving' the world
or 'stopping' climate change
(Taylor 2017). The heroic
narrative of saving the earth
is a product of the narrative
of progress and the individual,
but only so many people can
join in heroic salvation; a frame
of justice requires instead
consideration for everyone,
including the impoverished and
excluded. From this position
actors can move beyond 'one
big solution,' towards learning
how we can redistribute
impacts away from
those least responsible, and
how we can mitigate, adapt,
and minimize suffering as justly
as possible.
