statements through the use of phrases such as "we all" "our" and "everyone." Students in Lima, Nairobi, San Francisco, and Calgary shared similar sentiments to this team member from Beijing: I think there is little individuals can do. Even though we can collect waste and use a cleaner transportation, what one person can do is limited. But if everyone does a little thing at the same time, the effect would be fabulous. ( B E I J I N G , B L O G 4 B ) 2 . 2 . 2 Jus tice Though the call for everyone to be responsible for action was very common, this assertion was challenged at times by other team members, who recognize that not everyone is equally responsible for causing climate change. Most of these [low income] people don't have any political/social power and opinion, they don't contribute much to the climate change because they don't have much money so they don't have cars and don't buy much stuff. ( S Ã O P A U L O , B L O G 2 B ) In addition, students recognized that many people can't afford to 'buy green' or make serious adjustments to their routines and livelihoods. Ghana doesn't have the largest demographic of rich people - a lot of people are below the poverty line. So, it's kind of like, you can tell them about climate change, but then they are trying to survive. You know, so it's kind of like, I can't tell them, 'Oh, buy a water dispenser' when they can barely afford water for the family. ( A C C R A , I N T E R V I E W ) Lastly, team members recognize the most acute stresses of climate change will impact those with the least means, including other species, Indigenous peoples, those living in poverty, and future generations. Most families in Beijing and Kaiping and Guangzhou rely on air conditioners to keep themselves cool whenever they're at home. People who may not have the luxury to afford an air conditioner are more susceptible to heat stroke and other health conditions attributed to long exposure to heat ( E D M O N T O N , B L O G 2 B ) There is a place called Santa Maria Mountain in Columbia that has a special ecosystem... and also there was this indigenous community living on the mountain, and when the weather started to change... this community had to move to another place because the animals and birds that used to live there aren't there anymore, so they don't have access to food. ( B O G O T Á , I N T E R V I E W 1 ) These realizations form the underpinnings of climate justice: those least responsible for causing climate change are likely to be the most exposed and least able to respond to its multiple, cascading impacts. It follows, if the underprivileged are not causing the problem, then | 43 Y O U T H A N D C L I M A T E C H A N G E 2 0 1 8 E D I T I O N
