32 | F I N D I N G S India's Going from Hot to Hotter! On May 19, 2016, the temperature in northern India hit a record- breaking 51C. Such extreme heat can be, well, extremely dangerous, particularly for children and the elderly, those with health problems, and people living in poverty, who have no access to air conditioning. Or, like, water. Scientists tell us extreme heat events are on the rise in India, and are likely to continue. This figure shows the increase in Summer mean temperatures in India from 1960 to 2009 (A). The accumulated heat wave intensity--meaning how hot it actually gets (B), number of heat wave events (C), heat wave duration (D), and total number of heat wave days (E) between 1985–2009 have also increased over most areas of India relative to the previous period of 1960–1984.
