" We Came From Ice and Snow and So Shall We Remain My view may not be shared by many, but I will be very clear that my piece is not intended to be celebratory: rather, it is meant to be critical. You cannot wish for a better future if you don't know or don't acknowledge the past and present – all notion of time is inherently connected. As a young Indigenous woman, I hope my piece and words strike up conversation of the importance of history and the effects it has on the present. Canada's history is not glorious by any means and many Canadians continue to ignore it. My wish for the next 150 years, starting especially with 2017, is that people learn to respect one another and not deny the atrocities that have been experienced and continue to be experienced by Indigenous Peoples and other People of Colour. I do not see one country, I see many nations that have been forced to relocate, have their rights extinguished, voices unheard, land stolen, families separated, and women gone missing. We, the Dineh, came from ice and snow and so shall we remain long before Canada ever existed and longer thereafter."
