Create To Learn is an innovative program designed to support 80 Indigenous youth from across Canada who are interested in digital media and storytelling. Through the Create to Learn program, participants are given access to hands-on training on digital media skills and storytelling through a one-week intensive summit hosted at the prestigious OCAD University in downtown Toronto. Students return to their home communities equipped with tools such as a Macbook Pro, DJI Spark Drone, GoPro, Samsung 360 Camera, and an iPhone 6s. Participants are provided support from a dedicated staff team that assist them in bringing tools back to their community with the hope of inspiring other youth to share stories that matter to them. Through this program we hope to offer participants an opportunity to grow in their skills in creating content on topics such as: culture, language, identity, decolonization, and hope for the future. Funding can be used to support ideas implemented by one or two youth, for instance; community events or gatherings. Or groups of youth can also work together on bigger ideas such as building a community garden, distributing care packages or hosting a community photo and video exhibit featuring traditional knowledge shared by community elders.
