Environmental Studies FOOD INSECURIT Y with Growing North This lesson will delve into all facets of food insecurity including: causes, effects and locations. There will also be forward looking focus, seeing how the world is working to address food insecurity and what we can expect to see in the next 5-10 years. WELCOME TO THE MARINE JUNGLE with The Vancouver Aquarium From Piranhas to Caimans, students will discuss the most renowned species known for tropical rivers, as well as some species they may never have heard of before. Students will engage in a discussion of how the tropical freshwaters have impacted human life, and how humans in turn have affected the rivers. Any questions the students have can be answered by the marine educator, who will guide them on this adventure through the flooded river of the Amazon. ALTERNATIVE GROWING METHODS: GREENHOUSES AND HYDROPONIC S with Growing North Fruits and vegetables are particular about the climates they can grow in. It can be challenging to grow in certain areas of the world with extreme climates, either hot or cold. However, alternative growing methods have been developed to grow in these environments, and are regularly practiced today. This lesson will focus on alternative growing methods with a focus on geodesic greenhouses and internal solutions such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and vertical soil structures. SCIENCE OF OIL SPILLS* with Boonsho Museum of Discovery Join us as we explore the Gulf Oil Spill or Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We will study how the oil spill happened, the attempts to contain it and how the oil was recovered. We will also briefly compare to a land spill and discuss animals effected by it. *Materials required.
